BA9: Wind

Wind, is quite simply the flow of air and/or other gases through the atmosphere. Wind “comes” from charged particles in the air and gases in the atmosphere. When these particles are charged they move very quickly and spontaniously. There are many different types of winds, they get their names from the level of intensity or how fast and how hard the wind is blowing. These types are breeze, hurricane, cyclone, typhoon and storm. Most of these are well known, can you guess which type of wind is the most intense? The last amazing fact about wind is that they can actually form land formations due to the amount of heat the land surface provides.

Today we know so much about wind that we can actually use this annoying piece of mother nature to our advantage. Going “green” these days has a lot to do with saving, recylcling or limiting electrical power sources. Many farmers and some average joe homeowners use giant windmills, known as wind turbines to generate electricity. There are even some generators that rely heavily on wind power just in case the commonly use electricity goes out. In addition to saving money on the electricity bill wind is also used to have some good times. We use wind in things that are fun like, sailing, windsurfing and kiteflying. As we can see in today’s era we use wind for many things and it is not just an annoying gift from mother nature.

We hear, or shall I say read about wind from ancient times. Most of the talk of wind was about wind gods creating it. For example, the Greek wind gods, Boreas, Notus, Eurus, and Zephyrus. All the Greek wind gods had a ruler or keeper named Aeolus. Aeolus was also known as Astraeus, the god of dusk and along with the goddess of dawn, Eos, he fathered the four winds. The Greeks in this time also noticed that the wind seemed to change according to the season that they we re currently in. The next example comes from Japan. It is Fujin, japanese wind god, the oldest of the Shinto gods. The legend says that Fujin was present at the creation of the Earth and let the winds out of a bag. He did this to clear the world of mist. Lastly, the Bible talks about the wind. It mostly states about the powers the wind may have on the land and people.

Now we talk about the future of wind. All that is said are not facts but opinions and predictions about the future. Today we know that some people are using wind to gain power for their homes. I believe that in the future we will all use wind turbines to give power to our houses, and after a long while that may be all we use. I think that American people especially will benefit from this due to the current economy. It is a money saving trend that people will attacth to so fast in order to use the money for many other needs and wants. Although wind is not always guaranteed people will rely heavily on the money they save and the power they recieve from the wind and sun as well. The Earth will go green but will is happen before we collide with the sun?
