Hey Jo! So I was asked the question, Why is it important to understand one’s changing language situation? I thought that since you were majoring in ESL that it would be perfect for me to explain my view to you. I think that it is important to understand different student and colleagues language situations for many reasons. The first, is understanding one another. Many times one person may say something with a specific meaning and the other person may not understand or have a different meaning to the same statement or word. Another is , understanding that different cultures have different signs for respect. So if you are talking to someone that won’t look you in the eye you can rethink and maybe come to the conclusion that that is the respectful thing to do. The last is translation. Sometimes when translating word(s) from one language to the next signals are crossed and the meanings do not match up. So it would be a good idea to keep an eye out for that. Anywho I thought this was interesting and wanted to pass it on to you along with some of my ideas. Talk to you later.

Why is it important to understand one’s changing language situation? This is a posing question for us here at The House of Insurance. I would like to share with you three aspects that I personally think are important. To begin, we need to understand out clients at all times and they need to understand us as well. With language barriers it is always a good idea to make sure both the client and the agent mean the same thing when a statement is made. The second, is more culture related but important as well. Showing signs of respect differ from one culture to the other and sometimes client or agent may feel that one is being rude when really they are showing the highest respect for that person. The last has to do with translation of word(s) and statements. Sometimes things do not translate well or soemone does not quite understand the other. Making sure that all agents have these three points in their mind and along with a little research according to our clientel would benefit this company tremedously. This could potentially eliminate confusion between the parties invloved. Thank you for your time.
